  • Self-denial

Introduction: Self-sacrifice and self-denial drag people down. Self-respect, helpfulness, and goodwill enable people to find the right path. Here are some articles by L. Ron Hubbard that will help you gain clarity and set you on the right path! Self-sacrifice versus self-respect Today, a few self-explanatory quotes from L. Ron Hubbard. My only question is this: Are we being conditioned into a criminal society, or is this merely the true face of a society in which taboos have disappeared? You probably know the saying: “A fish rots from the head down.” And when you look at what is currently happening around the world – well, these things do not simply happen by themselves. Much love, Max Hauri Unethical behavior begins with self-denial The only unethical thing I have ever been able to discover is for an individual to deny himself. And if an individual thoroughly enough denies himself, believe me, he's unethical because he'll wind up by denying himself and everybody else and everything across the eight dynamics. That's real unethical – also immoral. And you'll find out the downgrade of everybody was when he denied his own strength, truth and power. And so an auditor has to solve that. It's a solution that comes rather easily. Getting Up Speed (Part II) 17.11.53 The criminal lost his self-respect The criminal who has elected himself bad cause through having found it impossible to trust himself (and a criminal career always begins at the moment when the criminal-to-be loses his self-respect; a career of prostitution cannot begin until self-respect is lost; and self-respect is only lost when one considers himself to be bad cause) can only escape becoming an effect by fighting all good cause. The reformation or reclamation of the criminal does not depend upon punishment, which only seeks to make him more MEST than he is, nor yet upon good cause, which he must fight, but upon the reestablishment of the criminal's self-respect; for only after this is he capable of being good cause. Scientology 8-8008 We are the ones who judge ourselves most harshly Probably every drunkard has made people into slaves by pushing alcohol down their throats. It's wonderfully literal, this whole thing. Awfully condemnatory too. But if you want to solve human ills, you'd better understand this, because man condemns himself more than any judge or jury will ever do. He has an instinct for what is right. He has an instinct for what is wrong. And it's based on the eight dynamics. The eight dynamics, morals, ethics – these things all go hand in hand. He knows when he is doing right. But after he has committed too many overt acts and when he cannot get enough motivators, then he says to himself, "There's nothing I can do about paying my debt to society, so it doesn't matter what I do." And you get a criminal. He's already had to decide that. He couldn't make it come out even. He couldn't suffer as much as he'd made people suffer. And so he had to just say, "Well, it doesn't matter what I do now." Now he really goes in for overt acts, only on a total irresponsibility. Overt Act Motivator Sequence – Bulletin 4.01.59 The true nature of human beings Religion is the first sense of community. Your sense of community occurs by reason of mutual experience with others. Where the religious sense of community and with it real trust and integrity can be destroyed then that society is like a sand castle unable to defend itself against the inexorable sea. For the last hundred years or so religion has been beset with a relentless attack. You have been told it's the "opiate of the masses", that it's unscientific, that it is primitive; in short, that it is a delusion. But beneath all these attacks on organized religion there was a more fundamental target: the spirituality of man, your own basic spiritual nature, self-respect and peace of mind. This black propaganda may have been so successful that maybe you no longer believe you have a spiritual nature but I assure you, you do. In fact, you don't have a soul, you are your own soul. In other words, you are not this book, your social security card, your body or your mind. You are you. This will become more apparent, if it isn't already clear, as you read this book. Convince a man that he is an animal, that his own dignity and self-respect are delusions, that there is no "beyond" to aspire to, no higher potential self to achieve, and you have a slave. Let a man know he is himself, a spiritual being, that he is capable of the power of choice, and has the right to aspire to greater wisdom and you have started him up a higher road. Of course, such attacks on religion run counter to man's traditional aspirations to spiritual fulfillment and an ethical way of life. For thousands of years on this planet thinking man has upheld his own spirituality and considered the ultimate wisdom to be spiritual enlightenment. The new radical thought that man is an animal without a spiritual nature has a name: totalitarian materialism. Materialism is the doctrine that "only matter matters". Volunteers Minister Handbook L. • Politics

If you repeat a lie often enough, ti becomes Politics Introduction: I learned from Ron that you don't have to worry about big politics. The most stable datum for me is myself. I know that I am an immortal spiritual being. A Thetan. And you are my stable data, and all the many people who successfully keep a society running. "I know that I know nothing" – Socrates The more I know, the more I know that I know nothing. That is how I feel today. Do you understand what is really going on in the big wide world? Can you still tell who is with whom, and who is friend or who is foe? I can't. Many years ago, I learned from Ron that you don't have to worry about big politics. Over all these years, I’ve come to the conclusion that—no matter what form of government currently prevails—they do what they want anyway. Democracy is window dressing. Even in Switzerland. Speaking of forms of government – I’m very cynical here – when I see what is going on on this earth, you’d have to call it a "Self-Managed Prison." The most stable datum for me is myself. I know that I am an immortal spiritual being. A Thetan. And you and you and you are my stable data. My family and my friends –and all the many people who successfully keep a society running. You know – the First, the Second, and the Third Dynamics. Scientology gives me the understanding and the tools to work together with other people and to expand my field of operation. Ultimately, it is always about the individual – about you and me. One can only work together with friends. Ron writes it so beautifully in the HCO PL of 13 February 1965, Politics. Much love, Max Hauri Politics HCO PL of 13 February 1965, Politics Now and then you hear me speak derisively of governments and ideologies – including democracy. If, by seeing I criticize an ideology, anyone seeks to believe I embrace its opposite, he has failed to get the point. What political system could work amongst very aberrated people? A democracy or a Communism would be a huge joke in an insane asylum. Well, isn't it? The basic building block of any political system is the individual. One can seek to avoid this point by conceiving of the masses. But you can't have masses which aren't made up of single units. Therefore the single unit is the basis of a mass. No political system applied to a colony of monkeys would have anything to govern but monkeys. That's plain, certainly. A political system seeking to function amongst ignorant, illiterate and barbaric people could have marvelous principles but could only succeed in being ignorant, illiterate and barbaric unless one addressed the people one by one and cured the ignorance, illiteracy and barbarism of each citizen. The collective think of apes is ape-think. A Fascism led by and applied to idiots would be idiot-Fascism. So there is no reason to suppose any political system is any better than those who use it to govern or be governed. The only difference in existing systems of politics is their relative values in giving the individual a chance to develop and receive a higher level of personal sanity and ability. That rules out any system which witch hunts, freezes opportunity, or suppresses the right to improve by any workable system or suppresses a workable system. Watching the U.S. and Australia fight Scientology with blind fury while supporting oppressive mental and religious practices proves that democracy, applied to and used by aberrated people, is far from an ideal activity and is only aberrated democracy. Every human has in common with every other human the same reactive bank. This is the most they have in common. The reactive bank – unconscious mind, whatever you care to call it – suppresses all decent impulses and enforces the bad ones. Therefore a democracy is a collective-think of reactive banks. Popular opinion is bank-opinion. Any human group is likely to elect only those who will kill them. That's concluded from actual 1950 experiments. The group succeeds only by the efforts of individuals who rise above their banks and do their best for their fellows despite the vicious character of groups and the idiot nature of collective-think. Believe in the individual being and work with him and you will find he is basically good. Work only with a group and you work with collective-think which is basically bank and therefore evil. Scientology gives us our first chance to have a real democracy. By freeing from the worst aberrations each individual, one then achieves a group which doesn't react only on bank and which will be, like the individual, basically good. For the bank was made to keep people who were not bad from going bad. It was a mistake. So it is bad. We prove daily in Scientology that an individual freed of aberrations reacts more decently toward his fellows and that an individual, restimulated, acts worse; we prove that the individual under stress of aberration is unreasonable and an individual freed is bright. So we can conclude on actual evidence that the first true democracy will emerge when we have freed each individual of the more vicious reactive impulses. Such beings can reason, can agree on decent and practical measures and be depended upon to evolve beneficial measures. Until we have done that we will continue to be critical of human "democracy" – and any other political philosophy advanced upon Man as a cure for his ills. A political philosophy can't audit. We can. And don't be so sensitive to popular reaction. Just get on with making a saner world and it will all come out all right. L. Ron Hubbard

  • Change

Introduction: In life, one must bring about change and be able to handle it. Without change, there is no progress. Scientology improves the abilities the being wants to improve. It makes the able more able and strengthen his capabilities. Scientology helps him rediscover his true self. Change Scientology has an incorrect image attached to it – although Ron neither intended nor taught it that way. I believe it is simply a humanoid aberration. However, it is also a fact that the Church of Scientology – especially during the time I was involved – dramatized this. At the time, it bothered me. I protested against it internally, but I couldn’t clearly recognize it. The subject is change. On Grade 3, one becomes a Change Release, which is very valuable. In life, one must bring about change and be able to handle it. Without change, there is no progress. This may have led to a kind of “tolerant” attitude or blindness – the idea that one should “change people.” But that itself is a humanoid aberration. Scientology does not change people. It is not the goal to change a thetan. We remove engrams and secondaries from a thetan – those things he himself perceives as disturbing. Scientology improves the abilities he wants to improve. We make the able more able and strengthen his capabilities. We move him up the Tone Scale. A thetan is basically good – and that is what Scientology restores to him. Scientology helps him rediscover his true self. I cannot forget my last day as a staff member in the Church of Scientology. It was in Copenhagen; I had been sent there for an ethics handling. After I had written up my so-called overts and withholds, the Ethics Officer asked the decisive question – more likely it was a command: “Have you changed?!” My answer was no – and I left. She wanted me to change. She did not want me to be who I am. She was not interested in me. She did not grant me beingness. She acted against me as a thetan. I was one of many. Especially through ethics actions, they tried to change each of us. They tried to force us into a mold. But let’s be honest: this phenomenon is widespread. There is practically a “pandemic” of wanting to change others. People are constantly trying to change us. If you ask a husband about relationship problems, he will often say the wife needs to change – and vice versa. Politics, governments, and armies also constantly try to change us – often through a kind of “ethics” that tells us what is good and what is bad, what we are allowed to eat, how warm we are allowed to heat our homes, and which people are considered good or bad. Our world is full of ideas about “how we should think” – with the intention of changing us. One could certainly say the intention to change others is evil. Scientology, on the other hand, increases theta – life energy and joy of living. That is my major realization, which I recently had in auditing. Scientology grants beingness. Much love, Max Hauri What is Greatness Certainty 13-3, March 1966 – L. Ron Hubbard   The hardest task one can have is to continue to love one's fellows despite all reasons he should not. And the true sign of sanity and greatness is to so continue. For the one who can achieve this, there is abundant hope. For those who cannot, there is only sorrow, hatred and despair, and these are not the things of which greatness or sanity or happiness are made. A primary trap is to succumb to invitations to hate. There are those who appoint one their executioners. Sometimes for the sake of the safety of others, it is necessary to act, but it is not necessary also to hate them. To do one's task without becoming furious at others who seek to prevent one is a mark of greatness – and sanity. And only then can one be happy. Seeking to achieve any single desirable quality in life is a noble thing. The one most difficult and most necessary to achieve is to love one's fellows despite all invitations to do otherwise. If there is any saintly quality, it is not to forgive. "Forgiveness" is a much lower level action and is rather censorious. True greatness merely refuses to change in the face of bad actions against one – and a truly great person loves his fellows because he understands them. After all, they are all in the same trap. Some are oblivious of it, some have gone mad because of it, some act like those who betrayed them. But all, all are in the same trap – the generals, the street sweepers, the presidents, the insane. They act the way they do because they are all subject to the same cruel pressures of this universe. Some of us are subject to those pressures and still go on doing our jobs. Others have long since succumbed and rave and torture and strut like the demented souls they are. To re-save some of them is a dangerous undertaking. Were you to approach many ruling heads in the world and offer to set them free (as only a Scientologist can) they would go berserk, cry up their private police and generally cause unpleasantness. Indeed, one did – he was later assassinated by no desire of ours but because of the incompetence of his own fellows about him. He could have used Scientology. Instead, he promptly tried to shoot it down by ordering raids and various berserk actions on Scientology organizations. That he was then shot had nothing to do with us, but only demonstrated how incompetent and how mortal he really was. As we become stronger, we can be completely openhanded with our help. Until we do, we can at least understand the one fact that greatness does not stem from savage wars or being known. It stems from being true to one's own decency, from going on helping others whatever they do or think or say and despite all savage acts against one; to persevere without changing one's basic attitude toward Man. A fully trained Scientologist is in a far better position to understand than a partly trained one. For the Scientologist who really knows is able not only to retain confidence in himself and what he can do, but also can understand why others do what they do and so knowing, does not become baffled or dismayed by small defeats. To that degree, true greatness depends on total wisdom. They act as they do because they are what they are – trapped beings, crushed beneath an intolerable burden. And if they have gone mad for it and command the devastation of whole nations in errors of explanation, still one can understand why and can understand as well the extent of their madness. Why should one change and begin to hate just because others have lost themselves and their own destinies are too cruel for them to face. Justice, mercy, forgiveness, all are unimportant beside the ability not to change because of provocation or demands to do so. One must act, one must preserve order and decency, but one need not hate or seek vengeance. It is true that beings are frail and commit wrongs. Man is basically good but can act badly. He only acts badly when his acts done for order and the safety of others are done with hatred. Or when his disciplines are founded only upon safety for himself regardless of all others; or worse, when he acts only out of a taste for cruelty. To preserve no order at all is an insane act. One need only look at the possessions and environment of the insane to realize this. The able keep good order. When cruelty in the name of discipline dominates a race, that race has been taught to hate. And that race is doomed. The real lesson is to learn to love. He who would walk scatheless through his day must learn this. Never use what is done to one as a basis for hatred. Never desire revenge. It requires real strength to love Man. And to love him despite all invitations to do otherwise, all provocations and all reasons why one should not. Happiness and strength endure only in the absence of hate. To hate alone is the road to disaster. To love is the road to strength. To love in spite of all is the secret of greatness. And may very well be the greatest secret in this universe. L. Ron Hubbard

Much love, Max Hauri   Fixed Ideas Full lecture available here, given by L. Ron Hubbard during the 6th ACC in London, the 6. June 1959 Here are a few excerpts: Now, the earlier on the track, the greater the power to make an intention or postulate stick. And when one had the intention of making them stick and the intention boomeranged, of course, one couldn't admit he was wrong, so he made the intention stick someplace – and there he is. So as he goes down the track years and years and years go by, lives and lives go by, and one fine day, why, he finds himself with an address book full of dames and a tremendous establishment and a gold-plated Cadillac and mystifies everybody by committing suicide, you see? He made his own postulate stick, but he did it by sort of flipping valence, you see, and going along the line. And he became very obsessed with this thing. A thetan very easily becomes obsessed with making his postulate stick. If you want to drive any thetan berserk simply convince him by any necromancy or libelmancy or psychromancy, that his postulates aren't sticking. Rig up something which betrays him, one way or the other. … Fixed ideas. Aberration, as we know it, could loosely be defined as a fixed idea of non-survival importance. A fixed idea of non-survival importance is an aberration. That's a loose definition. A better definition, more technical, would be a fixed idea which is apparently unchangeable by the person himself and is inapplicable to his environment. And we get into various psychiatric conundrums and philosophic balderdash, and so forth, of the years of searching out the mysteries of Man and so forth. … When one no longer has any confidence in himself, one no longer trusts himself, then he adapts various ownership crisscrosses – ideas that things won't as-is if you no longer know their ownership. You see, that's a fixed idea, too. Then he can say, "Well, by no longer owning up to this thing, why, I'm all set." That's trust in self and that has to do with simply the fixing of postulates. And when he does not feel he is any longer capable of fixing postulates, all he does after that is, of course, is distrust. L. Ron Hubbard

  • Escape - Just because we could better understand the trap, made it no less a trap

Introduction: Just because we could better understand the trap, made it no less a trap. We curse at man-made hells. We spot cause in villainies uncountable. Yet, think now, what are we doing in a universe in which hells are possible. Here is something relaxing to read for the weekend. In one of the next newsletters, I will send you a full lecture. I thought about sharing just an excerpt, but no – you really need to hear the whole talk. Much love  Max Hauri Escape Ability 57, late October 1957   Well, I've been working now for a lot of yea rs to bring Dianetics and Scientology up to a point of super magic. It was easy to get them up to magic. In a world where no results, aside from accidentals, had been the order of things, it was simple to create magic. A cloying illness resolved, a fast heal of a broken limb, a recovery from fixations and obsessions, it was easy to repair these. That was simple magic. And time and again I've told you "this is better" and it's been true and auditing worked better. But what were we really looking for? We knew all of us that we were in a sort of trap called physical universe. And although it was all right to say we'd gotten in ourselves and that it was each man's fault, it is nevertheless true that it was a trap complicated by innumerable traps. It was all right to say that it was "natural" for man to kill deer. But that wasn't making it any easier on the deer. It was all right to recover enough data to know that dying wasn't fatal but still men died and dying often hurts. By no actual consent of our own we are torn from our friends and possessions and crushed into new lives. But just because we understood it made it no less arbitrary, no less painful. Just because we could better understand the trap made it no less a trap. I've heard people say, "I don't know what I ever would have done if you hadn't come along, Ron." All right, why should somebody like me have to come along if all the world is right and the universe an expression of deep love. We curse at man-made hells. We spot cause in villainies uncountable. Yet, think now, what are we doing in a universe in which hells are possible. Sure, maybe you even asked to come here. But deep in pain and shock, shadowed by your own forgetting, why puzzle now if this Universe is a good place. You wouldn't say a lion's cage is a good place for a child. Nor would you jeer at and accuse a child who unwittingly stumbled into a lion's cage. What is the cage doing there in the first place for a child to fall into? Let's be sane. We can rationalize this universe, we can explain complaints, we can blame the inmates but is it not true that we came unwitting into it? What do we really want out of Dianetics and Scientology? What could I really give you that you want? Escape. Is there anything wrong with escape? Is a man mad who seeks to leave a fire that chars him, a mass that crushes him, a world that laughs at his dreams and scolds him for his stupidity? Escape. Why not escape? Why not let a few others escape. After all, we're not a ll only ones . We can feel and we can cry. Tell me why Christianity won so well. Wasn't it because of promised escape? Tell me why Buddhism won so sweepingly. Because it promised escape. Well, why not escape. If the great religions of all time became great on the promise of escape, we must assume that a lot of people want out and that there's something wrong with in. This universe is a breaker of bones, a defiler of deeds, a mocker of gallantry and peace. I can say this with equanimity. I don't have to get emotional or even personal about it. A spirit seeks to advance, to improve. Each way is blocked. This universe knows only how to decay. Is there a way out? Yes there is. We have it in Scientology now. I have found it and charted it. I know exactly how to open the gate. For whom. Ah yes, that's the news. We used to say – "if your case is in good shape" or "if you really want to." Of course you want to. But it didn't require magic to open the gate. It required a super magic to let our friends go free. For seven years or less you have believed in me. You saw enough to know two things: (a) that I was sincere and would continue to work on it and (b) that a progress line existed which improved. All right. What has been done? The auditing skills have been created which led an auditor up to this. What has been done? In the lower steps of CCH we can rescue the people lowest down, even the unconscious people. I told the 18th ACC – "I am through researching south. All further HGC researches will consist of going North." I went North faster than I had thought I would. I have now taught the auditors in Washington and the Academy instructors how to go all the way north. All the way. I know why you're here and the fast way out. I have taught auditing skill to Academy students and the 18th ACC. I've taught all the way north to the HGC auditors. What is the way out? With no excuses, no byroads. Straight out. All the way. Without belief or faith or "right conduct" you can go all the way.   L. Ron Hubbard

  • Remembering and Forgetting

Introduction: The goal is to raise the self-determinism of the preclear. Memory is an automaticity which is not under the control of the preclear. By taking over the automaticities of memory and forgetting the preclear is capable of greater self-determinism. The Art of Remembering and of Forgetting A Thank you to Ron! One of Ron’s greatest achievements is the development of the so-called recall processes. Anyone who begins with the philosophy of Scientology encounters them already in the Communication Course – such as in TR 3. The basic intention behind this drill is to receive an answer to a question again and again. Of course, it is also about getting your question answered at all. What may appear absurd at first glance is, in its usefulness, brilliant. In Homo sapiens there seems to be a fundamental fear of forgetting. It manifests in the feeling that one must not forget – because whoever forgets can no longer justify or prove what happened. And whoever cannot prove something has lost. In addition, we are regularly asked to give an account: what we have done, where we were, how we obtained our money, and what we spent it on. Our society is based on countless records. It begins with the birth certificate, continues through various registers – and today nearly unlimited storage of our electronic communication has been added. There is a strong urge to know everything about everything and everyone. Nothing must be forgotten. Whoever knows nothing is considered foolish; whoever knows a lot is considered intelligent. This shapes our relationship with memory. Already in school we are conditioned to remember. The purpose of a memory or a record is that it persists. Otherwise one would not create it. It is like building a house – you want it to remain standing. Thus one hold on to memories and do not complete the cycle. It is like with a hoarder: more and more unfinished cycles accumulate until it becomes impossible to move through the space. Everything is cluttered; no free space remains. In an overcrowded apartment, one can only restore order after creating space again. It is exactly the same in the mind: it can become so cluttered that one can no longer evaluate anything. To bring order into an overcrowded mind, one must first create empty space. Perhaps this also explains why, when one assumes a new body, one cannot – or does not want to – remember previous lives: one does not want to bring the old baggage into the new apartment. Remembering Here the true brilliance of Recall Processes becomes visible. The invention of the repetitive Recall Process is – in its significance – comparable to the invention of the wheel or of money. Recall processes  form the backbone of the so-called Grades. Recall processes are training in handling memory – and in handling forgetting. In auditing it is not only about dissolving misemotions and pain. It is about completing numerous small and larger memories and being able to say: “The cycle is finished.” Or also: “It no longer needs to be created. Thank you, it is complete.” Interestingly, the easier one can forget, the better one can remember. Forgetting is an ability. One may imagine the mind like an apartment in which every memory has its fixed place. Yet this is an impractical form of remembering. A thetan can simply know. He can recall a memory from “nothing.” It is not lying in a drawer – it is not stored. For if it were still stored away, the cycle would not be complete; one apparently still “needs” it for some reason and continues to carry it along – consciously or unconsciously. A thetan can recreate a memory even if it no longer exists. To do this, he must abandon the idea that it might still be needed. Instead, there must be the willingness to recreate it when necessary – just as one can remake or reacquire a piece of furniture or an item of clothing. Here one also sees a difference from AI: the thetan can create something new. He is not dependent on merely copying or storing. He is the source and does not require vast archives. Recall processes are training in remembering. Auditing trains a whole-track ability – it is the conscious creation of knowledge and, if desired, the recreation of memories. Remarkably, all of this begins with the ability to forget. Below follows an excerpt from the book Straightwire – A Manual by L. Ron Hubbard, which I warmly recommend. Happy Birthday, Ron! Much love Max           Modern Straightwire Extract of the Book "Straightwire – A Manual of Practice Free PDF download – Book 20.– CHF + Porto On the theory that someone may pick up this book and have only time to read a few lines, or have a constricted ability in amount of material assimilable, right here in a hurry I wish to give you the type of Straight Wire which is today producing phenomenal results on preclears. The Command:   " Recall a moment of ______." Number of Times Command Used: Until the complete flattening of the preclear’s communication lag takes place, so that he can readily and at some length and quantity give replies without any difficulty. Automatic Forgetting … when we developed "Something you wouldn’t mind remembering," "Something you wouldn’t mind forgetting," in one of the clinical units of the summer of 1954. Immediately a great many limitations on Straight Wire were swept away and Straight Wire became a much more important process because it was getting much better results. Here for the first time we had entered into the idea that forgettingness was an actual attribute. In other words, it was a skill. A person forgot things so that he could have things. And, realizing that this was a skill and that it was on full automatic we, of course, had the reason why people were not able to remember. They were so anxious to forget. In the spring of 1955, in the tenth clinical unit, we discovered that "something you wouldn’t mind forgetting " was far, far more important than "something you wouldn’t mind remembering," and made several tests which demonstrated a considerable rise in tone as a result of using this single command: "Something you wouldn’t mind forgetting." However, because many more interesting things were showing up and occurring we did not give this really the attention it deserved, and actually to this moment the process is not as thoroughly tried as it might be. It might very well occur that this process would succeed many other processes as something which would produce a long-continued and stable result. … that the greatest automaticity in which anyone was engaged was remembering and forgetting . Thus, exercises on remembering and forgetting were, of course, very, very important. It should be understood, then, that no amount of engram running or present time processes would handle this highly specialized thing, automatic remembering and automatic forgetting. And in view of the role remembering and forgetting play in everyday living we couldn’t consider the person very thoroughly processed unless we had taken his memory into account. Thus, whatever other processes are run on the individual, something should be done in order to bring this automatic memory factor under control. We have rather suspected of recent months that it is not necessary to have a great versatility of subject in remembering in order to restore memory. The mere act of remembering something is enough to take over the automaticity. In other words, there isn’t an automaticity for every subject you can remember; there is simply an automaticity on the subject of memory. Similarly on forgetting. One might think there was a forgetting automaticity on every type and subject known, but there is only one mechanism behind all of this and that is simply an automaticity of forgetting. Now, if you were to stabilize a preclear in present time and do all sorts of other things with him and yet neglect exercising his memory in any degree it is probable that you would have left the sphere of recall untouched to his detriment and would have left him with this automaticity. And the automaticity of remembering and the automaticity of forgetting could, of course, push him on down again. So, we should say that any preclear who becomes stable should have had exercises in remembering and forgetting.   L. Ron Hubbard

  • Hope of Man

Introduction: The Hope of Man as it appears today in Scientology is thousands of years old. Our work does not represent a revolt. All it represents is the hope that Man again can find his own feet, that he can find himself… Over the past 100 years, we have repeatedly been told that without religions there would have been no wars, or far fewer wars. This is a frequently repeated lie. There are also hardly any wars fought over water, oil, or other resources. There is only one reason why we have wars: psychopaths * . Period. Human beings  are born with ARC and they live ARC. Psychopaths merely pretend to have ARC. Below, the excerpt of “ The Hope of Man” by L. Ron Hubbard from Ability magazine, Issue 5, mid-June 1955. "This individual, you, is today threatened by one of the greatest cataclysms Man has been called upon to face. He is threatened by a lot of bodies running around evidently on total automatic doing and planning interesting things for the demise of the race. And the next few years are going to be nerve-racking years. "If we understand what we know (and it's interesting that you have to understand what you know), we can go a long way in mitigating the effect and onslaught on a society of weapons which exceed the imagination of any of us in their destructive power, and which are going to cause, on every hand, a decline of the state of Man unless some of us know what we are talking about. And fortunately right now we do know what we're talking about." –  L. Ron Hubbard It needs more auditors who audit. The Ron’s Org is there for you. Much love, Max Hauri * According to Robert D. Hare, there is a concentration of psychopaths in the following fields: corporate leadership/top management, politics, the legal system, media and entertainment, and in special units of the military and police. Hare writes that approximately 2% of the population are psychopaths. Ron writes that 2½% of people are Suppressive Persons (SPs). The Hope of Man Extract of Ability 5, Mid June 1955 When we consider that a great deal of what w e now know with great exactness was already known and lost thousands of years age, we begin to see that we are not dealing with something new when we are dealing with Scientology. It is not something new. What we are doing with this data is new. The way this material is organized is new. The technologies with which we can bring about a new state of being in Man are new. But the basic idea, the basic hope of Man as it appears today in Scientology is thousands of years old. When we call Scientology a religion, we are calling it a religion out of a much deeper well than the last two thousand years. The great spiritual leaders of the past handed along enough tradition to make us aware of the fact that there was a spiritual side to Man, These great spiritual leaders have been hanged, reviled, misinterpreted, badly quoted and have not been comprehended at all. These great religious leaders begin with a monk, a legendary mythical monk whose name was probably not but is said to be Dharma. That word has meant "wisdom" ever since. Many thousands of years ago in the highlands of India he handed on information which was taken up and carried forward by someone who might never have existed, just as they say Christ might never have existed. That person was Krishna. We go forward from there and we get Lao-Tse, who in his Tao again handed on knowledge and said there was a spiritual side to life. Another one of these great leaders is Gautama Buddha, who never pretended to be a god. He pretended to be nothing but what he was, a man inspired with the wisdom which he had gained and which he taught. An enormous amount of what we call religion in the Western Hemisphere today was given to us by Gautama Buddha. It was filtered through the Middle East "Love thy neighbor" was one of the first lessons he taught, and it is that lesson which we have received from the Middle East. These people handed on a torch of wisdom, of information, generation to generation. It was handed along geographical routes, and one of those routes was the Middle East. And one of the people who handed it on was Moses. And again it was handed on to a man named Christ. And he handed it on. And even the Arab nation benefitted from this through their own prophet, Mohammed. These men I consider great spiritual leaders, because they gave to Man, on down through the years, the hope that life could go on, that there was a spiritual side to existence. Without that hope, I do not think Man could have survived this far down the track. It is a fantastic thing that today, in this twentieth century, thousands of years of belief in the field of religion have materialized into an actuality which can be put into effect rather easily by the average individual. We have at least brought this material into the category of practical. The oldest material Man had – hope, the spirit – has come into a culmination of being intensely practical. Let me say something about this word religion. Religion has a great many meanings. Where the public at large turns away from religion, they are turning away from its impracticality, and that's all they're turning away from. Scientology is knowledge. That's all Scientology is. The word Scientology means knowledge. Scio means "knowing in the fullest sense of the word" This is the same word as Dharma , which means "knowledge", Tao , which means "the way to knowledge" and Buddhism , which means "the way to spiritual knowledge." It's an old word, a very old word. But it contains in itself something else. It contains a positive direction, a positive goal and the goal is simply a greater freedom for the individual. And when we say "an individual", we're talking about something as precise as an apple. We are not talking about a collection of behavior patterns which we learned about from studying rats. We're not talking about the color of your hair or the length of your feet. We're talking about you, and we know what we're talking about when we talk about you. And therefore a greater freedom is indicated for the individual you. Why? Because this individual you is today threatened by one of the greatest cataclysms Man has been called upon to face. He is threatened by a lot of bodies running around evidently on total automatic doing and planning interesting things for the demise of the race. And the next few years are going to be nerve-racking years. If we understand what we know (and it's interesting that you have to understand what you know), we can go a long way in mitigating the effect and onslaught on a society of weapons which exceed the imagination of any of us in their destructive power, and which are going to cause, on every hand, a decline of the state of Man unless some of us know what we are talking about. And fortunately right now we do know what we're talking about. Our work does not represent a revolt. All it represents is the hope that Man again can find his own feet, that he can find himself in a very confused, mechanistic society, and can recover to himself some of the happiness, some of the sincerity, some of the love and kindness with which he was created. And if Man can do this, and if we can help in any way to accomplish this, then all the years of my life and all the years of yours will have been well paid for, and none of us will have lived in vain. We have a practical religion. And before you say, "Religion – grrr!" think of that – it's a practical religion. And religion is the oldest heritage Man has. Many, many of us are ministers. The fact is that we do not fit at all or influence or have any real contact with medicine, certainly not with psychiatry. We do not exist in the tradition of psychology. We can only exist in the field of religion. It is up to us to make religion into a much better thing than it has been and to use it to help our fellow man. L. Ron Hubbard

  • Acali Experiment

Documentary film “The Raft” by Marcus Lindeen from 2018 Introduction: The Acali Experiment proved that violence is often a result of external pressure and "control" systems. When left to their own nature, humans instinctively lean towards kindness and cooperation. The crew eventually united against the scientist’s tyranny, proving that the Survival of human connection is stronger than artificial social engineering. It proves that the natural social structure of human beings is not competition, but cohesion to survive. The experiment that proves Scientology right Human beings are basically good. One of the most important assumptions and working foundations in Scientology is that the human being is basically good. This is not just a nice-sounding advertising slogan, but corresponds to the truth. Man is not the monster that must be made “good” through force, laws, and morality. The good is already inherent in him – it is part of his nature, his “DNA.” If this were not true, auditing would not work. We free someone from engrams, overts (harmful acts), withholds, ARC breaks (upsets), misunderstandings, etc. – and the result is a Clear [Clear: a thetan cleared of enforced and unwanted behavior patterns and discomforts.] and an ethical being. I found it very enlightening and affirming when I watched this entertaining video about the Acali experiment . An anthropologist actually wanted to prove the opposite there – and it failed quite thoroughly. Here is a good summary about it. Education is important, no question – but auditing is better. Also highly recommended is Ron’s bulletin below. Much love, Max Hauri You can find all technical definitions in: https://slovary.pro/en/   Basic Assumptions of Scientology vs Overts From L. Ron Hubbard - Bulletin of 9. June 1960 The entire secret of all overt-withhold mechanisms is valences. [A valence is somebody else's identity assumed by a person uriknowingly.]   I have known for a long while that a profile on our tests is a picture of a valence. If the preclear were in no valence, but was himself completely, he would have a perfect test response and would be wholly clear. In this statement we have one of the background structure points of Scientology. This was an assumption point for some time, a point of departure, like “conservation of energy” in physics is the primary assumption point of 19th Century physics – if we assume this point then we have the “truths”, axioms and other data in elementary physics. The point, assumed and never proven (and not even well phrased) is the start point in physics from which all deductions are made. It is an “understood”, a non-examined theory. Physics was demonstrable truth, but only in a limited and finite sense. The moment nuclear physics, my dear companion that haunted my college days, came into action, the assumption point began to crumble and is not now considered to be truth. Hence while elementary physics works in a finite limited sense, it is not a considered true science any longer – it is only elementary science. Freud, for instance, had as his start point (or assumption point), the Libido Theory of 1894 in which he based all on sex. It is rare that a science ever embraces its own assumption point and resolves it. Freud was stuck with his Libido Theory, just as Newton’s successors were stuck with “Conservation of Energy”. So long as elementary physicists were concerned only with energy which “could not be destroyed or created” they tread-milled themselves into a dead-end mirrored in such things as inadequate costly engines, difficult construction and a complete lock out from space and other planets. The great Einstein, not a physicist but a mathematician, established a new science which deserved the name of the physical science “physics”, a name already purloined by the natural philosophy of the 19th. Century. Old time physics was the science of the age of fire and ended with the age of fire. It died to whimpering embers under the down blast of atomic fission. We are no longer scientifically nor politically in the age of fire. We are in the age of freed energy. We do not yet have an atomic physical science. We have only a number of guestimates like the bronze worker of early Greece who knew nothing of the facts of fire metallurgy. The fire age, begun by Prometheus, whoever he really was, is ending on Earth. The raw energy age has begun with all the teething troubles of any new era. Called the “Atomic Age” just now, it started with hints of others before Einstein but was actually born when Einstein wrote his Theory of Relativity. This, a crude guestimate, was yet a great departure point in the history of this planet. It has unlocked space to Man, promised him new engines, widened his scope. Unhappily it has also unlocked vast opportunities for political bungling – but I would rather say that it exposed political diplomacy as a bungling subject which must now urgently improve. Nations can no longer afford political ineptness. Now the assumption point of physics, the science of the fire age, became disproved and the science is in question and the fire age is in fact over. The holes in physics have begun to glare. Some day a new science will be organized from the assumption point of Einstein’s work (no matter if he’s debunked, forgotten or becomes a legend like Prometheus, the professors of tomorrow can teach as a myth [Einstein stole the secret of eternal fission from a Heaven named Princeton where the goals… ]) And ages hence somebody will prove or expose the basic assumption and the fission age will resurge or die, depending on whether or not the assumption is found to be true or false. In Freud’s case in a lesser sense, a short and ineffective but highly interesting age of psychotherapy began with the Libido Theory in 1894 and began to disintegrate through lack of progress and development about 1920 although the subject itself became an intellectual football in the late 20s, an artist’s cross in the early 30s and a teenager’s subject in the late 50s. His contemporaries added nothing effective to Freud’s work and the subject, like psychology, which originated in 1879 and assumed men were animals, failed in all fields but wide popularity. Back of all work on mental states, however, lie various assumption points, most of them hidden or undelineated, from which the remainder of the subject evolves and grows. If the cornerstone is proven only relatively factual, a long enduring career is guaranteed to the subject. Freud used as his assumption point more than his Libido Theory that all impulses and behaviors are sex-motivated. He assumed that if one were sex-motivated, then if one unblocked this drive by removing an early traumatic sex experience that was impeding the drive, the patient would recover from neurosis. All manner of interesting complications proceed from this: art, being considered a sublimation or aberration of the sex drive, had to be considered wholly neurotic: success, being most desirable as sexual success, was a product of a blessed neurosis if achieved in any other field. As treatment it was common for a Freudian practitioner to cut through the Gordian knot by ordering a patient to go out and have sex with everyone, prove his or her prowess and thus become well and happy. While this secured the popularity of the subject, it did little to reduce asylum statistics as these were on the increase throughout the Freudian age and were highest at its end, and indeed were higher in Freudian dominated areas than in others where Freudian treatment was not used. (Not my propaganda, just a recorded fact.) The psychiatrist, following a Russian science, has a more basic and brutal assumption point which is that a shock cures aberration. The idea goes back a very long way, making psychiatry a long, if sporadic, age. Psychiatry ebbs and rises in use since it is a dramatization rather than a science. It springs from the same impulse that assumes punishment cures wrong-doing. The limited workability of this is apparent around us on every hand. We could do nothing socially about crime so we inhibited crime by striking at criminals. This gave us suppressed criminality and more criminals but it must be said that lacking any solution that worked well, then any solution that even seemed to work occasionally was considered better than nothing. Perhaps at some early date in whole history this worked better, but all expedient cures tend to become a new illness. Alcohol, in any alcoholic, once cured something but now produces with amazing similarity the malady it once cured. These are stop-gap cures that do this, not cures in any absolute sense. As the earliest punishment was the production of a shock in the offender whole track history continues to repeat the treatment for misbehavior as a dramatized action, not an intellectual undertaking. If a person misbehaves, he should be punished. Thus if a person misbehaves insanely he must be punished. Psychiatry is not, then, a science, but a legalized, at present, dramatization. And this is the very dramatization that makes this a cruel universe when it is. Punishment is unworkable as all the statistics show. Punish the criminal and he becomes, too often, a confirmed and hardened criminal. All this, however, is based on a yet earlier lie. The last two years of my researches have been devoted to establishing or not, as the case may be, whether anything could actually be done to a person, or whether it was not the person himself who did it. I “knew” the latter was theoretically true but I had not found means to demonstrate it – and indeed was quite prepared to discover that something could be done to a person without his being prior cause. This work will be found under all 1958-59 data released all overts and withholds. The earlier assumption to punishment is that something can be done to another being. By evidences to date, odd as it may seem, it appears, by all processing tests, that one becomes aberrated only by means of his own, not another’s actions. I do not say that nothing can be done to a person or a being by another person or being. Obviously communication exists. I am only saying that all aberrative effects of action are created by the person who has them. Indeed none could be processed successfully through a burn or engram unless he himself were holding the aberration there – for the fire, location and other people are not consulted and are not even there in fact at the time of processing. A preclear being audited on a past incident can recover from its ill effects. Therefore it seems conclusive that he himself must be causing the ill effects in present time or he could not eradicate them since the “sources are not present”. Thus they must not have been the sources of his “ill effects”. The preclear must have been. Inspecting the assumption points of Dianetics and Scientology one finds now that what was originally assumed is fact. Thus we are to be here as a science for a very long time. As no science before ever proved its assumption point that I know about, we are suddenly unique in that our results tend to verify more than our basic truths. The further we go forward, in other words, the more basic are the assumption points. Unlike, then, physics or psychoanalysis or other sciences, we have examined and improved our assumption points. We assumed in Dianetics that if we removed engrams, life would resurge and become good. This assumed that a being was all right until injured and that eradicating the injury would find him all right again. This is not the same as Freud for Freud never assumed goodness or rightness in Man, but on the contrary seemed to warn that we had better not go too far, art and all that depending on the madness of us all. As God seems to be blamed for most of the art work in this universe this seems a most impudent evaluation of God’s sanity on Freud’s part, although I do not think he ever displayed an actual professional sign saying “S. Freud, Psychotherapist by Appointment to God”. The Dianetic assumption that Man is basically good and is damaged by punishment holds valid in practical practice and in some tens of thousands of cases (and we’re the only ones in history that validated our findings by strict long, long precise testing on cases); we find that the more we process successfully, the kinder and more ethical our people become. That disposes of the vile nature of Man by staggering poundage of evidence. The assumption that “all art is derived from aberration” is discounted by the numbers of singers and artists who sang better and painted better after they were made saner by us. The basic psychiatric assumption that enough punishment will restore sanity is disproven, not only by psychiatric statistics but by actual observation and removal of the effects of “punishment” by processing. That a being, without aberration, would be good, ethical, artistic and powerful, is still a basic assumption in Scientology. It has just been demonstrated as factual for our practice. This is news. Our assumption point has just become a basic truth. It is not just an assumption. Therefore we will now find ourselves on a new plane of progress, perhaps with new teething troubles, certainly with even further goals. The truth was demonstrated in this wise: I knew valences, those mocked-up [Mock-up: A mock-up is something the thetan puts up and says is there.] other-beingnesses a person thinks he is, were the source of test profile patterns. When we rid the pc of an undesirable valence his profile rose on the graph and he felt and acted better. When we did not alter the valence in tested cases the profile remained much the same. If the preclear were driven into undesirable valences by experiment, his profile worsened apparently, although this is more difficult to verify, since the tone of the existing valence was undoubtedly dropped as well. Now from this I have found the mechanism by which a being gives himself pain that is actually self-inflicted but is apparently other-inflicted. And this is a vast stride for it resolves O/Ws [Overts and Withholds] and we can consider it a broadly completed cycle of research ending two years with a victory for our assumption point. By being a valence, not himself, a person confuses the source of pain. Inflicting it himself upon the valence he is in, and by experiencing the pain from the valence, a being can counterfeit the effect of being an effect of punishment. By being Valence A, he can conceive the environment is guilty of striking Valence A, but as this is in fact an overt by himself against Valence A (if only by failing to protect it) he feels the pain of Valence A. As he thinks of himself as Valence A, he can then feel his own pain. The conclusion is that to feel pain and for pain to persist one must be in a valence. The remedy for pain, illness, aberration, insanity and the lot, then, is to free the preclear of valences. Apparently, freed of all valences of an unconscious level, the preclear would yet be able to experience, but would not be involved with pain, etc, except by postulate. The way to free him of all valences or unconscious counterfeit beingness is not the purpose of this paper. Here I only wish to examine with you the aspects of assumption points of subjects and sciences (each of which has one, usually unknown to the originator) and to pass along the interesting intelligence that our former assumption point of “remove the aberration and you have a worthwhile person” has become demonstrable in practice and can be considered truth. This means a new level has opened to the future with new certainty. An overt recoils upon one because one is already in a valence similar to that of the being against whom the overt is leveled. The mechanism is exposed. And as it is exposed, we find it is not needed since a being without valences is basically good. Only a being with valences has his overts recoil upon him. Only a being with valences commits overts harmful to others as he is behaving as he supposes the “evil” valence would behave but as no unvalenced being does. L. Ron Hubbard

  • Master Affinity, Reality and Communication at Ron's Org

Introduction: Success obeys one law: our ability to be, do, and have depends entirely on our ability to communicate. Increase your potential. Learn and master Affinity, Reality, and Communication (ARC Triangle) at Ron's Org. Affinity, Reality, Communication = ARC Triangle Almost everything you learn in Ron’s Org is  Affinity, Reality, and Communication. Whenever someone asks you what you do, you can say: “I’m in Ron’s Org.” – “And what do you do in Ron’s Org?” “I’m learning Affinity, Reality, and Communication.” And just like that, you’re already in the middle of a beautiful conversation about the most important triangle in Scientology: ARC. And yes – every auditing session and every training improves your ARC. ARC means understanding. ARC is also theta and life. Life itself consists of ARC – ideally with other living beings. ARC is universal, including in dissemination. Don’t talk about Scientology; talk about the ARC Triangle, about how applicable it is and how it brings understanding. Everything you do is an improvement of ARC. Further below you’ll find another great description of ARC. Much love Max Hauri The Adventure of Communication Ability Journal 51 – 31. July 1957   The success level of a person is his communication level. One can have only those things with which he can communicate. To have it is necessary to communicate. One can do only those things with which he can exchange communication. One can be whatever he feels will assist him to carry out his ideas of communication itself. It has been three years since we first isolated communication as the dominant corner of the Affinity-Reality-Communication triangle. Now when one realizes that have and the Reality corner of the triangle are the same and when one understands that control is possible only in the presence of maximal Affinity, one sees in Control-Communication-Havingness theory the working aspects of the Affinity-Reality-Communication theory. We have always known A-R-C was true. We now know its best-working aspects in the Control-Communication-Havingness theories of processing. Communication continues its dominance. Affinity gives us the only working mood of Control. Reality gives us the reward of Communication. Thus one can Be – one can Do , one can Have only as well as one can communicate. At the intensely successful Freedom Congress, just held, a number of Training drills were presented which have as their goal communication betterment. Doing these drills betters one's communication ability. Thus these drills can be seen as an opening door to better beingness, better doingness, better havingness. While, as everyone recognized at the Congress, there is no substitute for Academy training in these drills, doing them yourself at home can result in enormous improvement. We have found the level from which to live successfully – Tone 40. We have found the drills and processes by which to get us there. High Adventure requires high communication. Could there be anything so brash as to stop us now?   L. Ron Hubbard

  • Reasonableness Explained

Introduction: " Reasonableness" is a very interesting humanoid subject that is well worth taking a closer look at. “The reasonable man adapts himself to the world. The unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.” – G.B. Shaw Former staff members of the church of Scientology are more than familiar with the term reasonable . A term which, at least in my perception, was used far too often—and often incorrectly. Reasonable or, as Ron actually called it, Reasonableness, is a very interesting humanoid subject that is well worth taking a closer look at. Let us begin with a quote by George Bernard Shaw:      “The reasonable man adapts himself to the world. "The unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. "Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.” George Bernard Shaw died on November 2, 1950 – it is quite possible that Ron was familiar with this quote. Below 1.0 on the Tone Scale, one takes on the effort of the other person or of the environment. Above 1.0, one fights it. Above 2.0, one is indifferent to it, but not apathetic. And above 3.0, one can bring the environment, through one’s own drive and enthusiasm, to do what one wants oneself to do. This is not the forcing of one’s own intention – that would fall more in the range of 1.0 to 2.0. Reasonableness has a great deal to do with the lowest band, 0.0 – 1.0, that is, apathy. Someone tells you some kind of nonsense, and you are reasonable about it – “reasonable,” that is. A doctor says, “This could be cancer,” and immediately you are in agreement. The doctor is an authority, and I am almost a “0,” so it must be true. “Stay at home” – yes, that’s reasonable? “Interest is the price of money” – is that really true? “Man thinks with the brain” – really? We are reasonable about so many things. The sheer amount of it is frightening. Humanity is trapped in Reasonableness worse than someone who has sunk into mud and digs himself in deeper with every movement – unable to get out without external help. Unfortunately, over the past decades our society has sunk further and further into this Reasonableness. Instead of being tough and demanding much, one says: “You poor guy, we have to show understanding for your inability and laziness and give you a lifelong pension.” And that is only the beginning. One becomes reasonable with more and more criminal elements. Society is systematically conditioned into Reasonableness even toward the most abhorrent things. Under the weight of enforced Reasonableness, many people no longer know what is right and what is wrong. Here is one of my favorite quotes from the book: “ The Creation of Human Ability ”  –  Chapter Resolve Dangerousness of environment – Cause and Effect: “However, it can be said with some truth, and was said in ‘Excalibur’ in 1938, that a man is as sane as he is dangerous to the environment. What occurs is that the environment becomes dangerous to the man and the man cannot be dangerous to the environment. And his answer to this is immobility and general deterioration. ” All of the above is very correct and OT. Unfortunately, it also has a shadow side: ARC – understanding, humanity – was often deliberately put out of operation. Staff had to live in a kind of enforced non-Reasonableness. This led to a situation where one often – if not to say never – was allowed to understand, or even wanted to understand. Whether it was a cheap excuse or a sincerely meant origination, one was brushed off with a curt: “You’re being reasonable!” Being OT always goes hand in hand with ARC. When projects are carried out without ARC and without understanding, one very quickly ends up standing alone. And that is exactly what we see in the church of Scientology. ARC includes. One should not – and does not have to – be reasonable, but one must nevertheless understand and have ARC.  “Truth which has no ARC hooked up to it, is denied the individual and can wrong him and harm him.” 17 March 1964 Much love Max Hauri   Reasonableness Explained Below are the definitions of Reasonableness from the Administrative Dictionary of Scientology (order changed): 2. Faulty explanations. (HCO PL 30 Aug 70) 3. A staff member or executive can be "reasonable" and accept reasons why something cannot be done, accept incomplete cycles as complete, and fail to follow through and get completions. All of which results in further traffic. (BPL 30 Jan 69) 4. An objective can always be achieved. Most usually, when it is not being achieved, the person is finding counter-intention in the environment which coincides with his own (this is reasonableness), and his attention becomes directed to his own counter-intention rather than to his objective, i.e. he has interiorized into the situation. (FO 2116) 5. You can safely say that being reasonable is a symptom of being unable to recognize out-points for what they are and use them to discover actual situations. (HCO PL 30 Sept 73 II) 1. Illogic occurs when one or more data is misplaced into the wrong body of data for it. An example would be "Los Angeles smog is growing worse so we fined New York." "I am sorry, madam, but you cannot travel first class on a third class passport." Humanoid response to such displacements is to be reasonable. A new false datum is dreamed up and put into the body of data to explain why that datum is included. (Reasonableness is often inserted as explanation of other out-points also.) In the smog one, it could be dreamed up that New York's exports or imports were causing L.A. smog. In the train one, it could be inserted that in that country, passports were used instead of tickets. (HCO PL 23 June 70)   Creation of Human Abilities R2-27: Resolve Dangerousness of Environment Resolving the Dangerousness of the Environment could be done in many ways, but by experience it should not be done by deleting various things which could be dangerous by the use of mock-ups. If there is any trouble with the preclear it is that the environment is insufficiently dangerous and so does not produce sufficient amusement. The physical body was built in the time when escapes from death by wild animals, by falling, were routine. It was built in an operating climate of great hazard over a period of many millions of years. It requires about three escapes from sudden death daily to stay in present time. Many of the preclears being audited in Scientology are being audited simply to experience a new adventure. However, it can be said with some truth, and was said in ‘Excalibur’ in 1938, that a man is as sane as he is dangerous to the environment. What occurs is that the environment becomes dangerous to the man and the man cannot be dangerous to the environment. And his answer to this is immobility and general deterioration. The basic remedy of this condition consists of getting a living thing – a pet, a child, a sick person – to reach out towards one’s hand. At that moment, without moving so suddenly that the living being will be startled, the person doing the process would withdraw his hand. The auditor would then advance, again to be driven away, over and over. And it would be observed that the living being would strike out with more and more enthusiasm and would recover considerable sanity. This, of course, is done on a gradient scale. While an auditor should know and use this basic process in assists or when processing animals, very small children or people who are extremely ill, the remedy which is used in Intensive Procedure is Cause and Effect. Parts of the body can be used in this process, the whole body, or the thetan. But the auditor must be specific about what he is addressing. The basic commands are, ‘What are you willing to cause?’ And when the preclear has answered this and the communication lag on the question has been fattened, ‘What are you willing to be the effect of.’ And when the communication lag has been flattened by the repeated use of this question, ‘What are you willing to cause?’ and so forth, using just these commands. One can additionally apply this, particularly when the preclear has a psychosomatic illness, to a limb or organ of the body as an assist. But in Intensive Procedure, the most permissive of these questions, as given, is used. L. Ron Hubbard

  • DRUGS AND TONE SCALE

Introduction: There is a correlation between drugs and Tone Scale. It is mainly people with low tones who turn to drugs. People are also much more vulnerable to drugs when they have been destabilized by one or more events or circumstances. Drugs and Tone Scale In the book “ Science of Survival” there is the “Hubbard’s Chart of Human Evaluation and Dianetic Processing” – a very valuable and helpful scale. I would like to add an additional column to this chart: drug use. In general, there is a widespread belief that drugs are addictive – in other words, that it is the drug itself that causes addiction. But what if this is not true? For many years, I have observed that it is primarily low-tone people who turn to drugs. People are also far more susceptible to drugs when they have been thrown off balance by one or more events or circumstances – that is, when they fall down the tone scale. One might also ask whether it is rather the case that drugs make people low-tone. They certainly do – but in my opinion, that statement does not go far enough. Scientology brings people up the tone scale. They become healthier and happier, receive their Grades, develop joy in communication and are able to find it. They are in present time, can solve problems, lose their resentment, and become causative. They love taking on new things, can handle change, are free from upsets, and are not fixed. All of these are high-tone qualities. A high-tone person does not need drugs. And it is their natural inclination to get rid of them. Many of our members u sed drugs before Scientology – I have heard many such stories. But once they found Scientology and took just a few basic steps, they shot up the tone scale and dropped drugs from one day to the next. The lower a person is on the scale, the stronger the craving for drugs. As mentioned, I have observed this connection for many years. But when I read about the Rat Park experiment , I felt I had to write about it. Because rats – even when made addicted – took opiates only if they were forced to live a low-tone, rat-unworthy life: a metal box without companionship, without dynamics, and without any future perspective. In a life-affirming environment, they no longer touched the opiates. You can read about it here. As I said, one could add an additional column to the chart, but ultimately everyone can imagine it for themselves. Drug dealers would probably be placed around 1.1 to 1.5. People below 1.0 are at risk of addiction – naturally including the minus tone levels.  “ Science of Survival” is an extremely valuable book. I repeatedly recommend it even to brand-new people, because it is one of the best basic books we have. It is the handbook for Scientologists. Price: CHF 30.– plus postage.
