By auditing children between the ages of six and ten, we would achieve in fifteen years a sanity and alertness never before obtained in that portion of the populace between the ages of 21 and 26, the age bracket which contains the energy and influence most strikingly felt by a civilization. Child auditing could very well be, in terms of practice, the most important single field of endeavor in the science. Therefore, we address here a subject which is broader than “what will I do to cure Johnnie’s sneezes.” Each of us who has a vested interest in the continuation of Earth and of Man should be willing to invest some of his industry in the investigation and application of the auditing of children. What passport do you need to help children? None. What recommendations, papers, figures, historical documents, statistics, and other buffoonery do you need to assist children? None. Historically, child therapy has been as difficult as it is now simple. Capabilities of your child Scientology increases the personality and potentialities of personality of the child in present time in order to secure the capabilities of the child in the future. It does this by exercising the capabilities of personality of the child. Thus, no one can reasonably object to the education of the child in present time so as to fit him for his future. Any expert in the field of child study can inform you that it is possible to take any child and, by giving him enough time, improve him. Parents can tell you this. Anyone, in short, could have gotten results from a child by sufficiently devoting himself to the child’s interests. When one realizes that this might consume many many hours per child, one sees immediately that without the fundamentals of Scientology the mass resolution of the education of children is impossible. Pride and personality of the child An auditor should also know that he should not rebuke, criticize, evaluate, or tease the children because of their mock-ups or their troubles with them. He should also know that he must not evaluate these mock-ups or try to interpret them as dreams, since whatever relationship they may have to dreams and regardless of how fascinating they may be, their interpretation will reduce the effectiveness and ability of the child. In fact, their evaluation for the child is actually destructive to his pride and personality, and such interpretation not only has no part in his processing but is expressly forbidden as being intensely harmful. By all standard tests of learning ability, reading skill, differentiation, and so forth, it will be discovered that the group, as a group, has progressed very far beyond what anyone has ever had the right to expect from the application of any form of child improvement. This is rather a sober fact which is based upon very wide, careful testing and observation under many differing conditions, under many types of instructors, and under many groups of children. The main goal of the process is to make able children far more able. Do we work to return children to «normal»? We are factually striking out to attain a level of culture and civilization higher than those attained before, in which we include any period of any nation anywhere. An auditor is not working to return children to “normal”. They have never been other than they are and, in the absence of what we know now, never could have been what we hope them to be. The work of the auditor is creative whether he is working on an individual or a group. A new type of childhood This is a state that is desirable not simply because it contrasts with former states, but desirable because it means a better civilization or perhaps one might say, a civilization. If one cannot imagine, he cannot predict. In such a child, the ability to imagine the answer by recombining existing factors has not been developed or disciplined. Many an engineering school has been embarrassed by turning forth honor graduates who yet failed dismally in the reduction of rudimentary practical problems to workable solutions. Even a thing as apparently precise as mathematics yet requires, in the good mathematician, an enormous amount of imagination. Imagination = Prediction = Solving Problems When we are trying to teach a child, whether to be proficient in geometry or in handling his body, we must teach him as well to predict a future state of personality; if he cannot predict a future state of personality, he cannot resolve problems. As a statement, the phrase “prediction of a future state of personality” almost encompasses the function of the human mind. Prediction of personality is somewhat different from simple prediction. It is necessary to have the potentiality of imagining what is going to happen to accurately assess a situation. The individual should be able to utilize this imagination, and the imagination should be under the discipline of the individual. A good instructor realizes that it is the discipline of the student’s mind by the student himself which accrues to the student the benefits of education. The discipline of the imagination is essential in any learning process. At night, the child is hounded by nightmares and delusions; by day his imagination conjures up for him images based upon factual and unimportant data of his environment which frighten and inhibit him. Delusion vs. imagination Delusion is imagination out of control. The control and discipline of imagination and its employment for the artistic and practical gains of the individual would be the highest goal of a training process. There have been great instructors in the past, great teachers who could lead their students forward by their own personal magnetism. Their effort was centered upon giving the student into his own hands, and this was accomplished by causing the student to desire to discipline his own personality. However, the discipline of personality is not necessarily the limitation of personality. It is better to be able to decide and control a few things to be, than to be under the whip of an imagination which drives one to be a great many things, none of which are under one’s control. These processes, then, aim directly towards disciplining the imagination and bringing it under the control of the individual child. The child can possess only those things which he feels free to be. Dignity and purpose are native to the child; badness and uncontrol are not. This is a gradual and continuous process, this creation of personalities and the process continues in any phase of life so long as the person has life in him. Get in communication first! The instructor is supposed to educate children, the camp leader is supposed to entertain them, and the hospital nurse is supposed to make them well. Any attempt to work with a child is an attempt to contact and get into communication with the child. Unless one can get into communication with the child he cannot perform his duties as pertain to that child. The task of communicating with a child does not begin with talking to the child. It begins with finding a child to talk to. There are many tricks which lead a child’s interest sufficiently into present time to allow one to communicate with him. Anyone dealing with children knows that this is the primary problem in that task. Quarrelsome children Children in present time are very easy to look after, very easy to instruct, and very easy to live with. Children out of present time, bent on revenge, and fresh from a quarrelsome breakfast table in an antipathetic home, form a noisy and rebellious group. The behavior of a child out of present time is not easily predicted, and this unpredictability is a considerable strain to the child’s leader. A child out of present time walks off the curb into heavy traffic, falls down fire escapes, gets hit with gymnasium equipment, hurts himself in games, and causes those multitudes of upsets which make the life of a child shepherd an onerous one, at times. The more one corrects and punishes the child, the less the child is there, since, in essence, correction is “go back into the past and pick up punishment data to remind you that the future is going to be unpleasant.” Help your child cope better with life The time to salvage a human being and get him out of the past into the present time is when that human being is a child, for he thus benefits most from his environment and all his education within it. Out of present time, the data and experience are going nobody knows where. A child who receives Scientology can be expected to cope better with problems which are assailing him than he could in the absence of Scientology; just as a child who is poorly fed at home can be expected to do better if he receives a hot meal in the middle of the day at school. Parents who are aware of the benefits being achieved with the child are prone to see that the child gets even further benefit in the form of professional auditing. This particular highway of approach to the problems of the world has been found workable. The amount of help an individual can deliver per capita with these processes easily is greater than with any other single method now in existence, for he is giving men back to themselves, and there is no greater gift at his command. The truth is that in Scientology we are studying an extension of the work of Gautama Siddhartha (Buddha), begun about 2500 years ago. He sought to end the endless cycle of birth and death and birth, and this led to an effort to show Man that he was a spirit and did not have to be a body and did not have to go on being clay. The Nature of Scientology Scientology (from Latin scio knowing in the fullest sense of the word, and Greek logos to study) is an applied religious philosophy containing procedures intended to assist an individual to become more himself and enhance his personal well-being. Scientology encompasses a broader scope than any Eastern or Western philosophy ever has, but it should be realized that a great deal of what we know, with an added exactness of understanding, was already known and lost thousands of years ago. So we are not dealing with something new in Scientology. What we are doing with this data is new, and the technology for bringing about a new state in Man as it appears today in Scientology, is thousands of years old. When we call Scientology a philosophy we are calling it a religion out of a much deeper well than the last two thousand years. The truth is that in Scientology we are studying an extension of the work of Gautama Siddhartha (Buddha) , begun about 2500 years ago. He sought to end the endless cycle of birth and death and birth, and this led to an effort to show Man that he was a spirit and did not have to be a body and did not have to go on being clay. Gautama Siddhartha found out how to move the spirit out of the body. The trouble he had with his work was how to stably do this or continue somebody in this exterior condition (the state of the individual himself, when it is outside his body, from lat. Exterus = outside). He did not know how to do this. Lamaism which began in Tibet after the time of Gautama Siddhartha, was actually developed by Gautama Siddhartha who went to Tibet and worked there to develop what is called Lamaism in an effort to produce a methodology to reach the basis of the mind and permit an individual to be spiritually free. Now that work, too, was relatively unsuccessful. We were more successful than that in Scientology. We can show an individual that he is a human spirit more easily than has been done before. And, of course, today we have been totally successful in achieving for the individual, his own awareness of his spiritual nature and abilities. Yet the work of Gautama Siddhartha, although looked upon as a failure, produced a sufficiency of wisdom on this planet to bring civilization to three-quarters of Asia. People poured out of China for centuries over tortuous and dangerous mountains and snow-filled passes to drop down into India, just to come closer to the area where Gautama Buddha had taught that there is hope and that the endless cycle of life and death does not have to continue. that an individual can be free even from this. The ignorant deified him and made idols of him but Gautama Siddhartha never pretended to be anything but a man. And due to him a great deal of this work was handed on and an enormous amount of what we call religion in this Western Hemisphere today was given to us directly by Gautama Siddhartha. Buddhism is the oldest and most numerous religion on this planet at this moment and predates Christianity by 500 years. Probably the shreds of Buddhism coming into the Middle East with the silk and spice merchants sparked a religious revival and a considerable amount of messianic activity in the Middle East. The spice and silk merchants of India and China now, after the contact of Alexander in about 333 BC, found out there was a Europe, followed on the trail of his retreating conquest and made a trade contact with Europe. From there on, Asia supplied Europe with spices and silks and other goods on an overland route. Along with them undoubtedly came Buddhism. “Love thy neighbor” was one of the first lessons taught by Gautama Siddhartha and it is that lesson which we have received from the Middle East, though it is probably more popularly known as a Christian lesson. There is even a tradition that Christ studied in India and at the age of thirty came into the West bringing wisdom and hope. This was the beginning of a further spread of religion through Christianity. The early monks of Christianity brought this religion into the greater parts of Europe. These people, then, handed on the torch of wisdom, of information, generation to generation. And right on down to this time we are indebted to them. Scientology can demonstrate that it can attain the goals set for Man by Christ, which are: wisdom, good health and immortality. Now, regardless of any truths or prophecies or prophets or anything else that happened as an independent endeavor, all this was sparked off by Buddhism. Gautama Siddhartha Buddha predicted that in 2500 years the entire job would be finished in the West. This is stated in the Pali Canons. Well, we finished it. Scientology is an applied religious philosophy, a direct extension of the work of Gautama Siddhartha Buddha. Everyone, anyone, of any race, color or creed, could be a member of the Buddhist Church. It was not limited to one caste or class or race or nationality. It was the first international religious movement, but although it has carried forward until today it actually has not moved its technology one inch further than it was pushed in Tibet until the advent of Scientology. The spirituality of Man is the basis of religion and it is the one thing that all religions have in common. They have different creators, different gods, different alters of worship, but in one thing they hold a common truth and that is that Man is a spiritual being. Only in Buddhism was this ever proven and it is proven now again in Scientology. This proof and the inherent potential ability of the spirit of Man you will find for yourself as you walk the well-marked road that is Scientology today. Scientology is an applied religious philosophy by its basic tenets, practice, historical background and by the definition of the word “philosophy” itself. The following will help clarify the philosophical and practical aspects of religion. Religious practice implies ritual, faith-in, doctrine based on a catechism and a creed. Religious philosophy implies study of spiritual manifestations; research on the nature of the spirit and study on the relationship of the spirit to the body; exercises devoted to the rehabilitation of abilities in a spirit. Scientology is an applied religious philosophy in the actual meaning of the word and gives Man truth and real knowledge about himself, and frees the being of the load that limits his consciousness to the only physical aspects of life. Auditor means “one who listens”. He or she is a highly trained person well versed in an understanding of the spirit. Auditing is a term used to mean the application of Scientology processes (Process: a series of questions asked to a person by an auditor to help her find out things about herself or life) and procedures to someone by a trained auditor. Auditors have since the beginning of Scientology, been the only individuals on this planet, in this universe, capable of freeing Man. At times, some forget or choose to ignore the fact that the Auditor is not just another fellow or a guy who works in Scientology. An auditor is a highly trained specialist, no matter what level of training. He or she is the only one who can give Man the truth that Man knows. The Auditor audits the spiritual beingness of the individual, increasing the individual’s understanding, enabling him or her to discard aberrations (Aberration: deviation from rational thinking or behavior) and to be more effective in all aspects of life and livingness. The Auditor is handling the reactive mind of the individual. The reactive mind is a portion of a person’s mind which works on a totally stimulus-response basis which is not under his volitional control and which exerts force and the power of command over his awareness, purpose, thoughts, body and actions and is the single source of human aberration and psychosomatic ills. It had managed to bury itself from view so thoroughly that only inductive philosophy, traveling from effect back to cause, served to uncover it. If you really want to know more about the reactive mind you should study “Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health” thoroughly. It’s enough here to say it still exists and still accounts for all one’s “unaccountable” actions. Since the perfection of the technology in Scientology to handle this reactive mind, freedom from mental torment is now a certain, attainable state and has been achieved by thousands of Scientologists. We can demonstrate to human beings that they are spiritual beings and that is the essence of religion. Man is a spiritual being. Where he came from and how and why and where he is going, are questions developed in religion. Auditing is directly concerned with increasing the ability to survive, with increasing the sanity or ability to reason, the physical ability, and the general enjoyment of life. The higher a person can rise on this scale, the righter he is in terms of reason, in terms of survival, and in terms of general well-being. The higher he is, the happier. The lower he is, the sadder. Happiness is important. The ability to arrange life and the environment so that living can be better enjoyed, the ability to tolerate the foibles of one’s fellow humans, the ability to see the true factors in a situation and resolve problems of living with accuracy, the ability to accept and execute responsibility, these things are important. Life is not much worth living if it cannot be enjoyed. The ability to live well and fully and to enjoy that living is the gift of a Scientologist. The Auditor might liken his job to removing the rocks and shoals from the hidden depths of a turbulent river and making of it a smooth-flowing and powerful stream. The Auditor is not changing the preclear (a person who finds out more about self and life through Scientology Auditing) by evaluation and suggestions. He is simply making it easier for the mind to do what the basic personality – the individual naturally wants the mind to do. This might be said to be the end goal of auditing. A fact which has been forgotten in this time of war and spiritual pestilence is that there have been times in Man’s history and prehistory when he has succeeded. It has not all been gloom and hopelessness. Else we would not be here today – even as poorly as we are. Men have lived to conquer all other forms of life, from the mastodon to the microbe. Men have lived to build walls and roads and pyramids which have defied the elements for thousands of years. Men have lived to write music which has pleased the gods and lines which have made the angels sigh and the devil weep. This is a time for Man to succeed again. The progress of tendencies, neuroses, habits and deteriorating activities can be halted by auditing, or their occurrence can be prevented. Auditing means to listen and also to compute. It consists of establishing where the person departs from optimum rationality in his conduct of life but, more importantly, where physically painful and painful emotion engrams exist and how they can be approached and reduced. Auditor An Auditor is one who listens carefully to what people have to say and who is trained and qualified in applying Scientology processes to others for their betterment. To be an Auditor you have to be willing to guide a person’s attention to an area in life that is bothering him by asking an exact auditing question, and then be willing to listen attentively to the person’s answer and then be willing to accept that answer and acknowledge him for that answer. While doing this, you must be willing to follow a code or set of rules (rights and wrongs) that an auditor follows when auditing someone. This will ensure that the person will get the most out of the processing he receives, and that nothing can happen that will make the preclear worse. What are saying the Ron's Org Auditors? It says, “He cannot change.” It says that nobody can change his intelligence; nobody can change his ability; nobody can change his behavior; Man can’t change. He’s finished! So, the world, having been taught this type of thing for quite a while now, then finds it rather hard to grasp the older and truer statement that Man, an individual man, has been going for a very long time and when he dies, he goes somewhere else. Now, man’s believed that longer, but this other philosophy came in and tended to wipe it away. How to improve life and keep it in place effortlessly? Life is improved on a gradient; it’s improved a little and then it’s improved a little more, and it’s improved a little more and a little more. It is you and your awareness which is improving. It isn’t the attendant and appendant machinery you’re surrounded with, like your hands and your arms and your automobiles, that’s improving; it is you. In Scientology we’re in the business of handling life. And we are just about the first ones that have attempted this for a very, very long time. And we are very good at it. When you tell a person about too big a jump, that you expect him to make too big an advance in too little time, you will give him a loss. In other words, he doesn’t then gain; he loses. And the Bridge which we have is a prevention against this. An instruction book about life The individuals who are on this planet were not issued an instruction book about themselves. We have had to do it all from scratch. But this is an instruction book on self, not an instruction book on the body or how you should be a good boy or a good girl in the society – an instruction book on self. And how do you learn about yourself? What you’re going to do? Where you can go? What your capabilities are? Well, you’d learn that by studying one lesson at a time and by achieving one improvement at a time, and if you did that in an orderly fashion, you not only would get very few losses but you would be able to advance up to a very high state. The Bridge We have the idea of a bridge across the chasm. Now, that is an old mystic idea that there was a chasm. There was a chasm between this existence where we are now and a higher plateau of existence, and that many people trying to make it fell into the abyss. Well, we’ve built a bridge and the bridge goes from this state of existence to that state of existence, and the bridge is all complete now and it can be walked. Now, we have here the chart itself and it goes from the bottom up. As we go up, a person at anyone of these levels, no matter where they are on the chart, is most likely to become aware of the next exact level up, and this is levels and a map of what the individual can become aware of. Scientology really can change the state or conditions of life! The more a person develops, the more his understanding increases. You become less and less vulnerable the more and more you are capable of understanding. The one thing that Scientology can do, and the one thing it does do, is change conditions, and if there’s anything that Scientology can do at all, it will be change of conditions. The concept of the eight dynamics (impulses of the individual on his environment) gives you the tools to make better, smarter decisions. “To any problem that exists there is an optimum solution: the solution which brings the greatest benefit to the greatest number of dynamics. "The infinitely perfect solution would be one which brought about infinite survival on all dynamics. In our finite world we find it necessary to suppress some dynamics in order to advance others, as we make decisions about every day matters. But any continued suppression of a dynamic (particularly one of the first three) soon brings about disastrous results.” – LRH What is the Tone or Emotion Scale In Dianetics, we are familiar with a number of different scales which enable us to assess people and their behavior. The scale we certainly use the most is the Emotion Scale, which is described in detail in "Notes on the Lectures ". With this knowledge, you will always be one step ahead of fate! Behaviors that previously seemed quite strange suddenly make sense. Because you now understand why the other person has acted this way! And you're better prepared for anything that might happen to you, which puts the advantage on your side. “The tone scale measures the ability of a human being to cope with the problems that arise for him. As such, it indicates also his emotional feeling and tone. “When the individual is operating at optimum, he has almost complete freedom of activity in any situation or problem that arises. Any force directed against the activity he wishes to pursue, he will overcome easily, with a feeling of achievement and satisfaction. “The lowering of the tone scale is reflected in the behaviour of the individual, his physiological reaction, his emotional reaction, and the affinity-communication-reality triad.
